What To Do With the Groom? Stand, Walk, Escort - You Decide!

I have lots of options for my couples when it comes to getting the Groom "down the aisle."

If you are fussing with your processional and trying to figure out placement and process, I offer these options for your Groom:

1) Start at the front with the Officiant and Groom. This is a traditional opening and often works as the Groom can greet everyone coming down the aisle - including parents, honored guests, his guys, etc.

2) Have the Groom escort his Mother, his Mother and Father, Mother of the Bride or honored guest down the aisle. He then takes his place next to the Officiant.

3) Have the Groom process down the aisle or from the side with his "guys."

4) What about the Groom walking down the aisle at the very beginning with the Officiant?

Lots of options - and more than just these four. There is no "right" or "wrong," - it's what's best and true for you as a couple and family.

My Best Tips For A Successful Small & Intimate Wedding Ceremony - Seattle Style!

I love everything about Mark and Lisa.

This is a profoundly devoted couple who have come together at mid-life to not only love one another but to create a loving home for their children.

We shared in their waterside ceremony at Seattle's Ray's Boathouse and thinking about how Mark and Lisa created such a sweet and intimate setting for their ceremony, let me share a few tips:

1) Do what "feels" right. A ceremony is a profound opportunity to celebrate your loving partnership and to celebrate the people around you. Mark and Lisa did this well and this was evident in the "feeling" in the room during their ceremony.

2) Children can never do anything wrong. A ceremony is a wild card. You really never know how things are going to turn out until they're over. I invite you to involve children in whatever way is joyful to you. If a small ring bearer makes a wrong turn, a child starts to cry or a pretty flower girl sits down in the aisle on her way down the aisle, your Officiant is up front with "Plan B."

3) Get Personal. A small and intimate ceremony is your opportunity to express your feelings about your partner, your commitment to showing up and your gratitude to the people around you. A best ceremony is one that is vulnerable, romantic, emotional and true.

What I Know For Sure About Being A Wedding Officiant in Seattle...

It's funny what I know for sure about all things "Wedding Officiant."

So, as I quietly ponder the beginning of this new year and with great gratitude for the amazing couples of 2011 - including the wonderful Cory & Paige Balph featured here, here's what I'd like you to know:

I Angst & Worry: In this work that I do as a wedding officiant in Seattle, there is much joy and happiness.

There is also angst and worry - will I get things right, what it this blows up, what if this doesn't come together?

I live each day with this paradox, recognizing the gentle tension I feel around a couple's wedding ceremony and wanting to get it right.

2) You Can't Do This Work As A "Job" - To be an Officiant, you must be "in love" with this work - which I frequently call a "vocation." It's a huge honor and I walk with great gratitude to be part of a lifetime moment and ritual of transition. To do this as a "job," just doesn't work.

3) You've Got To Be A Gumby. Yup, you got to "roll with it" - all of the time. Because a wedding is an emotional event, stuff is all over the place - all of the time. Thankfully, the small stuff rolls away for me and I've learned to handle the big stuff with patience and gentleness. And this doesn't mean on occasion, I don't freak out!

Talk to any of us working with engaged couples and with responsibility for a wedding day and you'll hear many stories of unexpected challenges and how things were fixed up.

Finally, what I know for sure: I get a kick out of what I do. I love getting up each day ready to take on what's next - eager to find out where I'm going, who I am meeting, what I am writing, what I am worried about, what I can take care of. It's all good.

Get The Officiant Outta There! A Picture Perfect Kiss.

That's right - for a kiss at the end of a ceremony, your Officiant needs to be outta there!

Nothing makes me more crazy than looking at photo after photo of an Officiant front and center in a couple's kiss at the end of a ceremony.

In this work that I do, I always move to the side as I am introducing a couple at an end of ceremony - this holds for a large/formal ceremony like Jeff and Rida had at The Woodmark Hotel in June (a perfect kiss in this long range photo!) or a kiss after a sweet and intimate elopement.

Woof! Including Your Beloved Canine Family Member In Your Wedding Ceremony...

As I look back 2011, I smile as I remember the "wedding dogs" who were a part of many wedding ceremonies.

If you want to include your beloved pooch in your ceremony, here are a few tips that I offer having worked with many canine ring bearers and canine petal girls:

1) A Wedding Dog Can't Do Anything Wrong. A dog only adds more joy to a processional and/or ceremony. So, don't worry about what your pooch is going to do or not doing to do. On a wedding day, dogs bring pure happiness to a ceremony moment and guests love this.

2) Appoint A Wedding Day Guardian. Find a friend or acquaintance to be your dog's wedding day guardian - this way, your dog has a companion for the ceremony and possibly cocktail hour and can be taken home once reception starts.

3) Wedding Wear! I think it's adorable for a dog to have a wreath of flowers or bow tie on as "wedding wear." Couples love to get their picture with their dog and having a dog in festive wear only adds more fun to the day.

Anna & Jason - A Few Years Later With Much Life & Love Lived...

A few years ago, I remember meeting Anna and Jason at a coffee shop in Tacoma. Their wedding was in a few weeks and they needed an Officiant.

Happily, I had the privilege of officiating their waterside ceremony along Hood Canal on a very hot May afternoon.

Anna was very pregnant at the time and I have this crystal memory of sitting on a bed writing out the marriage license paperwork with her.

I also have this sweet memory of walking across the grass with Jason to the ceremony area to get this wonderful couple married.

We fast forward to today - Jason & Anna are happy and well with their sweet son. I pulled this photo from Anna's Facebook page - it's beautiful, it's sweet and it has devotion, perseverance, joy, and change written all over it!

Yikes!

I arrived at Columbia Winery for Dan & Robin's Fall wedding ceremony and music was blasting from an outdoor event near door at the Redhook Brewery!

I soon learned that the Brewery was going to "shutdown" the music promptly at 6:30 for a number of weddings in surrounding venues.

Ah, the unexpected twists and turns of a wedding day!

I so loved the opportunity to marry Dan and Robin in fine style in front of 100+ family and friends. Robin is a family and marriage therapist and Dan is an artist going big-time after his dream. Kate & Robert are moving to Denver and Robert is a medical miracle. Alexa wrote that she and Cesar are happy and well and she is grieving the loss of her father.

The "Kid Wild Card" At Weddings - From An Officiant's Perspective...

I took this shot at Eric and Charene's wedding at a waterfront home in July.

Time and time again, Blake would run up the driveway incline, somehow captivated by the ascent! And time and time again, Dad would follow.

Might not have been much fun for Blake's father but all of us watching got a great chuckle out of the antics.

Children at a wedding are a wild card. The beauty is they truly can't do "anything wrong."

While many weddings don't include children, many do. And if you are having children at your wedding ceremony, here are a few tips:

1) Seat children in the back or on the "ends" of rows. This allows a fussy child to be taken from a ceremony with little drama or problem.

2) Provide something "new" for children to be entertained with during a ceremony. Some couples provide a basket of books, play toys or whatnot as guests and their children enter a ceremony area.

3) Consult with your Officiant on children in the wedding party. It's important that your Officiant take leadership with the children in your wedding and know their personalities, where to place them after processional and what to do in the event there is hiccup.

Marie's Grandmother, Kaj, created "WindWishes" and these beautiful and decorative paper art pieces were gently blowing in the wind from the trees covering the ceremony space. I took one of the windwishes and it's hanging on my office desk lamp with the words, "ceremony" and "clarity."

This spectacular place in nature is one of my favorite venues in the Northwest for a wedding ceremony and celebration.

Bily and Desi created such an easy/elegant and fun wedding weekend for their family and friends and exchanged vows on August 13th with grand sunshine, a few tears and lots of laughs.

The couple's beloved cocker spaniel, Romeo, did a stellar job getting down the aisle with the rings. He was a little too vocal during the ceremony so he left the wedding party and went to be with Desi's parents - very fun and joyful in all ways!

I was touched to meet Photographer Christopher Nelson at Billy and Desi's wedding. This guy's smile is a mile wide and his heart and spirit shows in how he "works a wedding" as well in his beautiful images, like this one! This dynamic duo (they are!) met on a 12-hour plane flight to Beijing, China and by the end of their adventure (Stephanie was a tour guide on Mark's adventure), they were in love.

Sometimes my job is just so darn great and I can't believe I'm actually paid to do this amazing work.

I had the great good fortune to marry Charene and Eric on July 17th in a beautiful waterfront ceremony in Suquamish, Washington, surrounded by family and friends, hosted by Charene's Mother, Chitra.

Eric and Charene share a very powerful and humbling love story and it was such a pleasure to celebrate their partnership and launch them into their marriage adventure.

Their little one, Kaylani Mya, did a beautiful job with her walk down the aisle and sat on Chitra's lap for the ceremony watching with her big eyes.

I had the pleasure of marrying Charene's brother, Terrance and his wife, Jamie, a few years ago at Newcastle Golf & Country Club. And I also had the profound honor of officiating a Memorial Service for Charene and Terrance's Father, Roger, in 2008.

Your Handy Dandy Marriage License - Signing Options And What I Prefer...

You marriage license.

I can't marry you without it!

Couples are "split" on when to sign the marriage license and everyone has a personal preference. There is no "right" or "wrong" way to do this - it's totally up to you as a couple.

Like Jeff and Jessica to the right, they signed their license and legal paperwork immediately after their wedding ceremony a few weeks ago at the Hall at Fauntleroy.

Other couples prefer to sign documents at rehearsal or before a ceremony so that they have private/personal time together "after they are hitched."

Signing the documents at rehearsal is my personal preference.

I request that a couple brings their marriage license to rehearsal (so I have it - no forgetting on the wedding day) and if they like, we get appropriate signatures.

I do not sign anything until after a ceremony is fully officiated and witnessed. And of course, I file all appropriate legal paperwork so a couple doesn't have to hassle with this!

The Case Of The Missing Rings - You've Gotta Love A Wedding Ceremony

And the best man still forgot the rings!

So, we all had a good laugh while the best guy ran to the lobby to pull the rings from a hiding place and raced back to Darrell and Irlanda's wedding ceremony at The Canal in Seattle, WA.

You've just gotta love a wedding ceremony!

And there was so much joy and laughter in the room to accompany this "snafu."

Truth? I roll with wedding snafus. They make a ceremony real and authentic and create lifetime moments to remember.

Look at these happy faces minutes after saying "I Do!" and walking down the aisle.

Matt and Jenna designed and created some very fun and lovely elements to heighten the joy on their wedding day.

Guests sat down at the ceremony to find caramel corn and bubble bottles on their chairs. For the ceremony, there were so many fun elements including a "cirque du soleil" feel with acrobats and aerialists!

Even more special was that the couple's most beloved pooch, Wookie, who was allowed indoors for the ceremony so he could prance "down the aisle" and present the rings.

Erik and Karen had been working for weeks with Wookie to walk (okay, prance!) down the aisle outside on the lawn. And when the weather didn't cooperate, they got a special okay for Wookie to participate inside the Mansion.

Wookie did his job beautifully...prancing down the aisle and "presenting the rings" at the appropriate moment.

Jeremy and Heidi very much wanted to be married on the deck of the Skansonia Ferry Boat - it was very important to them in a most personal way.

They bet that the rain would hold out and lost their bet. We sent their 100+ guests up to the 2nd deck of the boat to watch from above and with their wedding party and parents, started down the aisle - in the pouring rain!

So, huddling under umbrellas with lots of rain drops and great fun, Jeremy and Heidi exchanged vows and personal words.

Yes, I'll marry you in the rain - even in the hail! And I draw the line at falling out of a plane, showing up naked or in a fish tank (trust me, I've had invitations for all three!)

When I got a call from Patricia asking me if I was game for a road trip to Ilwaco, Washington for a wedding in a Lighthouse, the "drama queen" in me immediately said, "sign me up!" Arriving at the North Head Lighthouse on Sunday afternoon after a four hour drive, I was so happy to find Vincent and Patricia's two photographers in the Lighthouse Parking lot, getting ready for the quarter-mile trek in wind and rain to the Lighthouse. Finding an old coat and boots in my trunk, I joined the parade and in a short while, Vincent and Patricia blew in - literally! There was 50 mph guests and with the rain, it made for a windy arrival! Vincent and Patricia were married at the top of the Lighthouse in the Lantern Room. With the wind and rain whipping around them, they exchanged vows in the gentle shadow of the Lighthouse's Lantern. As I drove home that night, I was just so happy to be a part of such a special moment and wedding day...complete with a Lighthouse, lovely couple, two wonderful photographers, and more than enough rain and wind!

Forgot a boring wedding recessional!

As you are planning your wedding ceremony, take a little time to consider how to jazz up your walk down the aisle as husband and wife.

Here are four tips on how to add some "kick" to your wedding recessional for a fun and memorable "we're just married' walk down the aisle - not only for you but for your wedding party, too!

1) Surprise Roses & Note Cards for Mothers or Parents: Creating authentic and loving memorable moments within a wedding ceremony just doesn't happen. Most of the time, such moments are planned and orchestrated with a bit of planning and heart.

One nice touch for your recessional is to have your Officiant or Minister hand you both note cards and roses at the end of your ceremony (after the kiss and pronouncement, of course!).

Before you take your sweetie's hand and walk down the aisle, you both give your mothers or parents surprises roses and note cards as an "end of ceremony flourish!" This touch is especially special for a bride and groom who are especially close to their mothers or parents and makes for a sweet memory for a couple and their parents.

2) Parade of Children: This is a nice end of ceremony touch, especially if you have a lot of children at your wedding. Seat and group children together with their parents. At the end of the ceremony, the children pick up their small instruments which may be placed under their chairs (horns, kazoos, small drums, etc) and they become the "recessional music" and lead the bride and groom out for recessional.

You would need to put someone in charge of all of this. To create extra joy in the room, you may have your Officiant mention what is going on so everyone can fully participate and appreciate the chaos and joy of a children's parade. And what is true? A wedding is about authenticity and giving children a big and unusual job in a ceremony creates a lifetime moment.

3) The Interactive Recessional: Flowers and Kudos: As guests are seated, a hand-picked group of ladies are seated on one side of the aisle on the end and gentlemen line the other side of the aisle on the end seat. As the couple walks down the aisle after they are married, the ladies hand the bride flowers which become her "recessional bouquet."

The guys can "high 5" the groom, shake hands or conduct other fun "male bonding activities" as the couple creates an interactive recessional. The guys and gals lining the aisles are in on this surprise and if well orchestrated, makes for a great recessional moment!

4) It's So Bright You've Gotta Wear Shades! I was just at a wedding last year where as the bride and groom shared a kiss and were pronounced as husband and wife they turned around, pulled bright sunglasses from their pockets and danced down the aisle with their shades on! This moment created so much joy in the room.

To top it off, the wedding party then pulled shades from their pockets and danced down the aisle, too!

Getting Dumped By Your Wedding Officiant - What To Do When Your Officiant Cancels Or Is A "No Show"

As I was leaving Ryan and Angel's wedding ceremony at Volunteer Park yesterday, I checked my phone messages.

A groom named Larry left a message saying their Officiant was a "no show" on this afternoon and they were in a panic to find someone to marry them. Fortunately, I was able to zip down to Pike Place market and marry them last night, in front of 40+ friends and family.

So, what do you do when your Officiant cancels at the last minute or is a no show? During the high season (March - October), finding an Officiant at the last moment is most often about "luck" or "good fortune" as many Officiants are booked. Sorry, no easy answer here. My best advice is to get on the phone and start dialing. Or as "insurance," make sure you have a copy of your ceremony and get a friend/family member ordained on-line so they can step up in an emergency. This is especially important when it comes to a destination wedding.

Weddings are a beautiful thing. Especially in Seattle, Washington during the popular summer months.

And, on the way to a wedding day in Seattle, there are "local/regional planning situations" that can create added wedding day anxiety, stress and the occasional wedding planning nightmare.

As you plan your Seattle wedding this summer, I invite you to consider these 4 planning tips if you want to want to move into your wedding day with more grace and ease:

1) Seattle's Seafair Weekend - Traffic! Each Summer, Seattle goes crazy for its annual Seafair celebration. This culminates on the first week-end of August (check the calendar for exact dates) with a 3-day weekend extravaganza which includes hydroplanes and aerial acrobatics by the Navy's Blue Angels. Due to hydro practices and Blue Angel practices, the two bridges over Lake Washington are closed for periods of time on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, creating traffic chaos in Seattle.

If you have other dates to work with before confirming a wedding date, I encourage you to select another weekend. If you already have your date planned, consider putting an earlier ceremony start time on your invitation as people are often delayed/late because of traffic. Also, depending on where your ceremony is located, you may have engine noise from overhead as the Blue Angels fly over!

2) The Seattle Mariners/Seattle Seahawks/Seattle Sounds (August/September traffic nightmare combo) - Again, this is a well-known event cocktail that can create serious local traffic snafus, particularly if a wedding is located in downtown Seattle. Each August and September, the Seattle Mariners, Sounders and Seahawks schedule a game on the same day - and as both sports facilities are only a block or so apart, this create monumental traffic jams in and out of Seattle.

If you can, check ahead and see when the Mariners, Sounders and Seahawks are scheduled and adjust your wedding start time as needed. If you have already booked your wedding date and both teams are playing, alert your guests and suggest they arrive early to enjoy a complimentary cocktail!

3) Be Careful About Booking Your Wedding At The Seattle Center Space Needle On Bumbershoot Weekend - Bumbershoot is a huge and very fun music festival hosted at Seattle's Seattle Center each Labor Day Weekend. If you are looking at The Space Needle for your wedding ceremony and celebration (a very cool place!), talk to staff about logistics and parking because of the high auto and foot traffic all over The Seattle Center grounds.

Also, beware that if you do hold your wedding high in the sky in The Space Needle, you may hear music from the bands playing below. For most couples, this only adds to the color of their wedding!

4) Timing It Right And Don't Get Left Behind: Catching A Ferry to Kitsap County In The Summer Months - Each year, hundreds of weddings are held across the Sound from downtown Seattle in the beautiful area of Kitsap County. From Seattle, you can drive to Kitsap County and it's most convenient to take a ferry from downtown Seattle to either Bainbridge Island or Bremerton.

If you are planning your wedding on a popular Summer Seattle day, beware that the Washington State Ferries are packed with autos and people and oftentimes, family and friends have to wait one or two ferries before they can get on.

To make things more convenient for your guests, consider having them walk-on the ferry and then plan to have a bus or shuttle on the other side to get them to your wedding venue. This way, your family and friends can just park on the "Seattle side" and enjoy a ferry ride with curbside service to your wedding!

Okay, there isn't the most romantic of topics and here you go!

To be married in Seattle, Washington, you need a valid marriage license. Whether you are being married in three days, next week or next month, here are easy steps to obtain and use your license in Seattle.

If you are being married in Seattle, Washington, you need a valid marriage license issued by King County (or any County in Washington State).

To do this, you and your partner will visit a Marriage Licensing office in Seattle/King County during regular business hours. The cost for the license is $64, cash or debit/credit card. No blood test is required and both of you must at least 18 years of age.

When you leave the government office, you'll walk away with a packet of legal paperwork which you will give to your Officiant or Minister on your wedding day. The person who marries you must review this paperwork before your ceremony takes place and he or she will then get required signatures (both of yours and two witnesses) and return your signed legal document back to the County for processing/certification.

Note: There is a 3-day waiting period from the date your marriage license is issued. What this means is that from the date your license is issued, you must wait 3 full days before you can be legally married. Also, most people who reside in the Seattle area secure their marriage license in Seattle. If by chance you are being married in any other County in Washington State, the license you secure in Seattle/King County is valid in all Counties in Washington State.

What the heck happened?

I wish I could have relaxed more.

In working with couples, I often take pre-emptive action around the ceremony portion of a wedding day so a couple has some private time or quiet time immediately after their ceremony.

Yes, a wedding day is a huge/big experience. A smart couple consciously creates "moments" during a day where they are alone, quiet and can just "be."

As you consider "what to do" immediately after your ceremony, consider this possibility - take "quiet/private time" right after you walk away from your "we're married" moment.

Instead of a receiving line or turning around to greet family and friends, take 15-20 minutes alone together. You will never again have your "just married" moment so take advantage of this time to sit together, go for a short walk with your photographer or share some champagne and appetizers.

Also, while the words of your ceremony are very important, work with your Officiant around the "feeling" of your ceremony. This will help create moments within your ceremony that you will remember. Oftentimes, a couple doesn't really remember many of the words from a ceremony (really!). In other words, it's the feeling one remembers more than the words.

The key to sweet personal moments on a wedding day? Set them up - don't expect them just to happen.

Moments after Peter and Hannah walked down the aisle, I managed to capture this intimate moment before they turned to greet family and friends.

At rehearsal, we weren't sure what was going to happen on Sunday, February 20th - snow, sleet, rain, sunshine.

And remarkably, Peter and Hannah got a cold and crisp day with lots of beautiful sunshine for their wedding ceremony at The Canal in Seattle.

More and more couples, like Peter and Hannah are being married during the month of February in Seattle. The weather is a tad more predictable than January - venue costs are value priced for couples - and couples find that family and friends love a celebration in this month as it brightens up a grey time of year.

A Soldier's Gift To His Sweetheart: A Planned Wedding Day...

A few weeks ago, I received a phone call from a soldier named Zach.

I quickly understood that Zach was taking it upon himself to coordinate a sweet and simple ceremony and celebration for February 20th, a gift to his sweetheart, Meghan.

We talked a bit and before you know it, Zach decided on treating a dozen family and friends to a celebration dinner at The Bark Frog in Woodinville, which is on-site at The Willows Lodge.

Of course, Zach would have to get married first.

And Zach's wedding wish came true. He exchanged vows in a park-like alcove at the Willows Lodge to the delight of a small group of family.

In my experience, most weddings on Valentine's Day are small in size and big in heart.

Each year, I travel to wonderful places all over Puget Sound and Washington State for wedding ceremonies - big and small.

And over this time, I've had many experiences on the way to a destination wedding day. If you are planning your wedding outside of the Seattle area, here are three tips to help insure an easy and comfortable wedding ceremony:

1) Get Real About Timing Issues. If you are planning your wedding at a destination site that involves travel by car or ferry, your family and friends will appreciate sensitivity around the scheduling of your wedding day.

During a Northwest Summer, traffic and increased tourists can mess things up. As you work on a timeline for your wedding day (no matter if your guest list is 2 or 200), be overly generous with timing out the events of your wedding day so that you allow for traffic snafus, lost guests (or vendor), etc.

2) Shop Local For Vendors. Many couples hire wonderful wedding professionals out of Seattle/Tacoma and immediate areas for their destination wedding. And at the same time, don't forget to "look local" for vendors who may live in the immediate area. This can save your considerable money on travel fees and you have peace of mind that one or more of your wedding day vendors are "nearby!"

3) Be Extra Generous To Family and Friends. Don't underestimate the effort and expense it often costs to travel to a destination wedding - hotel, car, ferry fees, etc. If you are hosting a destination wedding, what a lovely thing it would be to throw a special party, dinner or barbeque for your guests who have travelled far or delight people who have made great effort to be a part of your wedding day with a special surprise or welcomed gift.

A Fall/Winter Wedding Full of Style: Ryan and Karin's Wedding at Hidden Meadows, Snohomish...

Fall and Winter weddings have a much different feeling to me than weddings in the Spring or Summer months ~ particularly if a wedding falls close to a holiday.

There is something about the glow of candles in the darkness ~ the anticipation of the holidays ~ the cozy feeling to a warm indoor space~ and how wedding attire is different in style in the colder months ~ that wraps a beautiful bow around a Fall or Winter wedding date.

And better yet, oftentimes a couple can get more value and/or a preferred rate on venue/services in the off-season!

With this said, Ryan and Karin were married this past Thanksgiving weekend at Hidden Meadows in Snohomish.

Planner Erin Lindeman took her signature black and white motif and crafted a beautiful design for the ceremony and reception areas, capturing Ryan and Karin's contemporary style.

Photographer Kristen Honeycutt didn't let Ryan and Karin down on their wedding day. In fact, she went over the top! In addition to gorgeous images from this wedding day, Kristen also created lifetime momentos with funsy and eclectic photos from her "crazy cam" photo booth at the reception.

Life Of A Seattle Wedding Officiant: Why I Would Love To Marry You And Why I Say "Check Others" Out...

Getting married - getting hitched - is a big huge deal.

When I meet with a couple, you won't find me "pitching a package" ~ i.e., the emerald package, the gold package, the pearl deal.

Instead, most often, when I meet with an engaged couple who is seeking an Officiant, I suggest that they meet with a number of Wedding Officiants.

Yes, I love this work that I do. And I love booking a couple for a wedding - especially one I am crazy about. Yet at the same time, I know one thing for sure. I'm the right Officiant for many couples and not the best choice for others.

Selecting an Officiant for a ceremony is a very personal decision and often a daunting decision for engaged guy and gal. When I meet with a couple, I don't arrogantly assume I'm the "right choice." I want a couple to talk or meet with a number of Officiants and to do their "selection homework." Then, when I am happily the best choice, I know that I have a couple who truly appreciates my personality, approach to this work and my heart and spunk. And I fully get that I am the best choice for them.

Fun Things Happen On The Way To A Wedding: Giggles From 2010 Ceremonies...

As I take a deep breath of gratitude for a wonderful wedding year in 2010, I can't help but think about the fun moments, the wacky moments, the "oh dear," moments and the many moments that took my breath away in awe.

So, as I take this week and next for rest and play, I think about these moments from 2010 and giggle:

~ The moment Michael and Lindy's young son escaped from a front church pew and made a beeline for the back of the church - to run with glee down the center aisle of St. Paul's church to his parents during their vows!

~ The moment Betsy the dog started howling during a sentimental song in a wedding ceremony (very funny and memorable for all!)

~ After reminding Best Man Brad about the rings 3 times, he still forgot the rings!

~ When Jeff and his wedding party rode in on a golf cart to start the wedding ceremony ~ and it stalled half-way!

A funny thing may happen to a bride or groom on the way down the aisle ~ or when a wedding ceremony begins...wedding ceremony anesthesia!

Really!

A wedding ceremony is a big emotional event. Knowing this, I often write for "moments" as moments and the "feeling" of a ceremony are what a couple and their family and friends will remember in the coming years, not the actual words.

As you plan your ceremony, here are three quick tips to "remember more..."

1) Slow Things Down. Elegant humor in the first minute or two of a ceremony relaxes everyone and "grounds a couple" to remember more of their ceremony... Memo and Kristin (in the photo above) are a great example of this. They mixed the sacred with elegant humor and created great ceremony memories for their wedding day at Shilshole Bay Beach Club.

2) Don't Over Practice. Rehearsals are terrific and at the same time, spontaneous moments create lifetime memories that "planning tactics" can't replicate.

3) "Focus On Each Other" ~ I encourage a couple to "focus on the other" during the ceremony - and by doing so, the rest of the world hopefully fades away a bit.

Jim and Holly's wedding ceremony on the deck of a waterfront home in Des Moines as the sun was setting was a truly "happy moment."

Wedding Photographer Sean Werner joined me to get this wonderful and fun couple "hitched" at sunset ~ and with a couple of their closest friends as witnesses, Jim and Holly exchanged vows with big smiles and a few laughs.

To me, it doesn't matter if a wedding ceremony guest list is 2 witnesses or 200 people.

It's all about the "feeling" and energy of the moment. Yes, I know this sounds "woo-woo" ~ and it's true.

Greg and I are back from a wonderful two week vacation in the Caribbean ~ rested and excited to re-engage for a new year.

Much like a bride and groom may feel at the end of their wedding day, is how I often feel at the very end of a 10-month wedding season - happy, worn out and so glad it's over.

Glad it's over?!

Yes ~ absolutely. It's a wonderful feeling to know that my weddings for the year are complete and well done (hopefully my couples agree). What I'm not shy about sharing with my couples and colleagues in the wedding world is the gentle tension I often carry and hide around every wedding.

The challenge of creating and officiating a wedding ceremony is this: you can't do it over. So with this work comes a level of attention and performance that demands a high degree of dedication and planning to insure a beautiful and memorable result - i.e., an authentic weddding ceremony.

As Kelly and Ryan worked to create a beautiful wedding day experience, thousands of couples in the Puget Sound area are now planning their weddings for 2011. Let me humbly offer a few hard earned "planning tips from the frontline of all things wedding..."

~ Keep It Real: If you want to be married on Alki Beach with 2 witnesses ~ do it. If you want to be married at Villa Academy like Kelly and Ryan with great pomp, do it. Life Is All About Change - Missing Our Beloved Dog Huckleberry And What I Learned From "Huckie" About Weddings...

We have unexpectedly lost our beloved Cocker Spaniel ~ the most Handsome Huckleberry ~ to a fast growing tumor in his abdomen.

Greg and I rescued Huckleberry 3 1/2 years ago from a life of abuse and neglect and we loved this sweet little gentleman so very much.

Huckleberry was kind. He endured a life of neglect for many years and yet he saw the world with loving eyes and a huge heart.

Huckleberry would most often rest on his bed near my desk as I would work. Sometimes I would ask Huckie for a little inspiration while writing a ceremony. Most often, he snoozed through my questioning and today, missing Huckleberry, I offer these three wedding nuggets which remind me of Huckleberry.

~ When it comes to a wedding, lead with kindness and gratitude and on a wedding day, live in the moment with happiness. Guests often take their cue from a couple ~ family and friends love a ceremony and celebration oozing with appropriate gratitude and graciousness.

~ Everyone is beautiful and handsome on a wedding day. Everyone!

~ Wag more. Bark less. Huckleberry stole this from a car bumper sticker and it's true beyond measure.

Robb and Ann's Sweet And Intimate Wedding Ceremony At The Edgewater Hotel ~ Sunset, Ferries, Very Happy Faces!

Robb and Ann traveled from California to downtown Seattle to be married waterside on October 22nd at the wonderful Edgewater Hotel on Alaskan Way. They exchanged personal vows that were a surprise and it was truly a hankie moment.

The Edgewater Hotel is a favorite of mine for a wedding ceremony and reception - whether the guest list is 2-10 happy people or 200+ happy people.

The weather was iffy during Robb and Ann's wedding week and on Friday afternoon/early evening, the clouds parted and we had beautiful sunshine on the "wedding deck" overlooking the Puget Sound!

In this work that I do, it's illuminating to me to really understand the heart and drive of a passionate Officiant/Celebrant ~ one that is fully committed to providing services to an engaged couple at the "perfume level."

As I finish with this group of 12 outstanding Wedding Officiants/Celebrants, I offer this insight into a heart of an Officiant:

~ The best Officiants are passionate about what they do. They are grateful for the opportunity to create and officiate ceremony and everything they do is about a couple and their wedding day.

~ The best Officiants truly freak out once or twice a year. This work can be intense and very personal and we're not perfect. We fall down. We screw up. We forget something. The best Officiants freak out and get over it - or if they mess up, they make it right. Always.

Laughter ~ giggles ~ big and small smiles ~ all of this has a perfect and elegant place within a contemporary wedding ceremony.

Remarkably, I find that many people have not been to a wedding ceremony where the "joy bar" has been raised ~ i.e., where laughter and appropriate humor are a piece of a marriage ritual.

In most of the ceremonies that I create and deliver, I like to weave in bits of humor and laughter. Of course, this all depends on the couple, their background/traditions and "where we're going with a ceremony."

And overall, I have found that touches of laughter, sweetness and glee add a flourishing touch to a memorable moment.

This gorgeous photo, taken by photographer Barbie Hull, in a pew at St. Paul's Church in Port Gamble this year, is one of those "aw schucks" kind of photos.

Involving children within a wedding ceremony is a dance in all things unexpected. Children love participating in a wedding ritual and providing a "big job" to a child - no matter what the age - is an opportunity to create a lifetime moment.

It's not about whether the child perfectly "executes" the job ~ it's about giving a little one a marvelous opportunity to participate in a special day with the adults "rolling" with what ultimately happens.

For instance, during the ceremony, Wake decided to leave his seat with his relatives and explore the back of the church. We saw him at the end of the aisle and called to him during the ceremony ~ he ran down the aisle and into the arms of his parents. Unexpected and unplanned, this was truly momentous and absolutely a lifetime moment for Michael and Lindy!

Fred and Jennie Hall are one of those couples I will remember forever.

They both live in Tucson, Arizona and I worked with Fred and Jennie via phone, email and editing pen to craft and write their wedding ceremony.

I finally met Fred and Jennie at rehearsal and was (and still am) so very taken with how they came to their wedding day ~ with graciousness, kindness and a grand sense of family and community.

Fred and Jennie coordinated their Seattle wedding long distance, juggling all of the logistics and challenges of selecting "vendors," coordinating venue details and much more. I often work with a couple who is "Seattle bound" for their wedding day and if it's a good match from the get go, the process of building and writing a ceremony can be very seamless.

This couple had a traditional and contemporary "feel" about them - and sometimes, this is more challenging to incorporate into a ceremony as you are straddling both formal and more fun and upbeat pieces within a wedding ceremony.

And everything "mixed well" ~ there were a few tears, a few laughs, a little seating snafu that turned out just fine and an amazing post-ceremony group photo ~ don't you just love a wedding!

Photographer Carrie Stark was with me on a brisk morning last week and captured this sweet image of Mark and Juanita Vidger immediately after they were married at Ruby Beach on the Washington Coast.

When I arrived at Ruby Beach on this early morning, I was so happy to see Carrie and finally meet Mark and Juanita who planned their oceanside ceremony from their home in Colorado.

With their closest friends and a well-dressed ring bearer and flower girl at their side, Mark and Juanita exchange vows on the sand ~ a truly perfect and some ways mystical moment.

I walked away from the beach to my car and looked back - just wanting a last look at the ocean and couple before getting in my car for the four hour drive back to my home on Bainbridge Island. I love the ocean and I left feeling very happy.

The were living in different States when introduced on a "hunch" by Rose's niece. Quinn and Rose were delighted to find such a sweet love at mid-life and Rose picked up her life and her girls and moved to be with Quinn and his boys.

Rose and Quinn have worked to create a loving and blended family that not only includes the two of them, but two boys, two girls, a dog, a cat, other creatures - and lots of love!

And for a flourish at the end, after a beautiful kiss and being pronounced as husband and wife, Jeff and Emily pulled sunglasses from their pockets and wore shades and danced down the aisle! Yes, Emily's beautiful wedding dress had pockets!

A few months back, I officiated a ceremony for a wonderful couple. Brian had never formally proposed to Amy and I found this out while working to create/write their ceremony. I called Brian and after a little conversation, we landed on a perfect surprise for Amy. On their wedding day, and before their exchange of vows, Brian got down on one knee and proposed to Amy. If only you could have seen Amy's face.

Ever Have One Of Those Life Moments That Are Beyond Precious? The Tale Of Mommy and Daddy's "Run-A-Way Boy!"

I don't know how she did it, but Seattle photographer, Barbie Hull, was "on it" during Michael and Lindy's wedding ceremony at Port Gamble Church in Port Gamble, WA ~ she exquisitely caught this perfect image of little guy Wake running toward his parents during their wedding ceremony!

Wake was supposed to walk his Mother down the aisle and changed his mind at the last moment. Instead, Wake rambled around the bottom floor and balcony of Port Gamble Church during the ceremony, entertaining himself as only little guys do.

As we honored Wake during the ceremony, we all turned and waved to him while he was peaking out from the church's small balcony area. And within a few minutes, Wake was running down the aisle to his parents for a big hug.

Crystal. Sweet. Perfect. Sometimes there are no words for a moment that takes your breath away.

And on this day, I had the marvelous opportunity to officiate their Inter-Faith wedding ceremony which celebrated their Jewish and Christian traditions/backgrounds.

The night before their Sunday evening wedding, Margot's parents hosted a beautiful sit-down dinner at their Mercer Island home before the casual wedding rehearsal (a bit cramped in a living room and it worked well!)

More than 150 family and friends traveled by ferry to Bremerton for this wedding day. Under a gorgeous Chuppah, Travis and Margot exchanged their vows and involved their parents and wedding party in the exchange of their rings.

Wedding Coordinator Alison Lum did a terrific job pulling together all details for a gorgeous ceremony setting and reception - Alison, you made my job extra easy!

I loved every moment of Jeff and Antonia's wedding ceremony.

Even the wacky weather!

On this wedding day we had clouds, great sunshine, light rain, a downpour, a rainbow and more sun.

And while the wacky weather forced us to move the ceremony inside, in hindsight, "Plan B" was actually the best plan for this couple.

As you can see from the glorious photo at the right taken immediately after their ceremony, this day was hugely joyful and such a celebration for Jeff and Antonia who planned their Kitsap County wedding from Canada!

In this work that I do, every couple I work with has a different vision for their wedding day.

So, indulge me while I take a minute or so so share a few of my hard-learned tips to creating a more elegant wedding ceremony:

1) Give Your Guests A Job ~ Before your ceremony begins or before pronouncement, have your Officiant/Minister tell your family and friends what is "going to happen next." This way, guests know what to do immediately after a ceremony and this creates a more elegant transition from ceremony to party/reception.

2) My Half-Hour Suggestion ~ If your wedding ceremony is starting at 6:00 p.m., put 5:30 p.m. on the invites. This "fudge time" allows for a little extra time for a bride/groom and wedding party and also creates a more easy and elegant welcoming for family and friends.

3) Put your Intention On Creating An Imperfect Wedding Day ~ Perfect Wedding days are "perfect' because they are imperfect. This is the paradox of a wedding day. Focus on the key ingredients of a beautiful wedding day: love, appreciation, gratitude, anticipation and peace. I love and treasure the imperfect moments of a wedding ceremony as they are spontaneous, often fun and joyful and handled with ease and care, they creates lifetime moments.

Yes, you've gotta love this couple! Seth and Amy are fun, fun and more fun. They created a very personalized ceremony, complete with a "25 places we will travel" keepsake box to be treasured and experienced for years to come.

I'm fond of saying a wedding is an event AND it is an emotional event. At a wedding, I've come to learn that people are listening AND they are not listening.

Because a wedding is an emotional event, a couple, wedding party and family and friends are most often "in feeling mode" - and officiating a ceremony so that the "feeling of the moment" is captured is both an art, a science (sort of!) and something learned over time.

Mother Nature was in full force during Tony and Shannon's wedding day. When I arrived at Alderbrook Resort for Tony and Shannon's 4:00 p.m. wedding ceremony, it was raining.

And within the next two hours, we had more rain, no rain, a little wind, sunshine - big sunshine! - and a rainbow. And then, a downpour!

50+ family and friends gathered for Tony and Shannon's waterside wedding at Alderbrook Resort this past Saturday and the weather just became a part of this couple's story. This was such a fun ceremony - Tony and Shannon share a great sense of humor and Tony's friend, Photographer Mike Tallman, had his running shoes on to capture the marvelous fun during the couple's vows and more.

And just after the ceremony completed, a rainbow - peaking through the clouds. The funny thing is that on this exact Saturday a year ago, I married Matt and Katie in the exact same location at Alderbrook and right after their ceremony, a rainbow!

Incorporating Hawaiian Customs, Rituals & Traditions Into Your Wedding Ceremony

When a couple incorporates rituals, themes or traditions from the Hawaiian tradition, this makes a wedding ceremony extra sweet.

As I move into this year, I find that four of my couples are weaving in Hawaiian pieces into their ceremonies. There are many ways to do this. Chip and Susanne were married recently at St. Paul's Church in Port Gamble and being that Chip has family and history from Hawaii, this couple exchanged leis at the beginning of their ceremony and also offered leis to family members.

Using the koa wood bowl for the blessing of the rings and ring exchange is also something that I'm writing into a few ceremonies that I am working on.

And here's what's true: if you'd like to incorporate Hawaiian tradition/ritual into your ceremony and don't have ties to the Hawaiian culture, "just do it!" A wedding ceremony is all about finding what resonates with your heart and Hawaiian marriage customs/traditions are beautiful in all ways.

Talk about synchronicity! I married two wonderful couples last weekend at the marvelous Hollywood Schoolhouse in Woodinville.

Jesse & Kelly were married on Friday evening and one of the sweet moments were the wishes and wisdom shared by both Fathers from the couple's Grandparents who could not travel for the evening.

Less than 24 hours later, I was back at The Hollywood Schoolhouse (yeah!) for Dan and Sarah's Saturday evening ceremony, featured in the photo above. I am quite sure Dan and Sarah's wonderful photographer, Brooke Hendricks, "got" the huge smiles on their faces during the ceremony - I'll also make a bet that one of these images will be a favorite from this day!

Why do I do this work? It's interesting to me how often I am asked this question.

So, just for fun, here are a few answers:

~ I do this work because it keeps me humble. I am wildly curious about love - what brings a couple together, why two people are committing for life. And in this work, I get a front row seat to love and am grateful for each and every opportunity.

~ Because this work grows me. This work pushes me to work at a 'perfume' level - most of the time, I get there. On occasion, I don't. With each year of doing this work, I grow and "buff up" as an Officiant and Celebrant even more...

~ Because sometimes this work scares me. Yes, scares me. Weddings are big/huge. I take this work on as "big/huge." I am better at this work because I always feel the tension of a wedding - the gentle tension that I've got one shot to get things right. This tension works to makes me a better Celebrant and Officiant. And sometimes, the work is tough. Mostly, it is truly remarkable in all ways.

~ Mostly, I do this work because it's a perfect storm of my heart, talent, curiosity and just because it's darn fun!

Wasn't the weather absolutely glorious this past week, especially on Saturday?

Bryce and Irene took me up on my "advice" and were married mid-week under a huge zillion year old tree in a "secret park" here in Seattle. Bryce's parents flew up from Florida for the event and the "friend paparazzi" were on hand to capture the event.

Congratulations to Robyn and Kenny married under great sunshine at the Shilshole Bay Beach Club and to Chris and Kriste' married at the Edgewater Hotel. It was a marvelous time at SODO Park on Saturday afternoon for Joe and Christine's wedding ceremony - tears, giggles, cheers - what a time!

I was deeply touched to join Colleen and Matt for their intimate ceremony with family and friends at a private home late Saturday evening. The story surrounding this couple's wedding pulls on the heart strings - Colleen and Matt, I wish you much peace and comfort in the days ahead and a very happy married life together.

And finally, on Sunday afternoon, I was at Kiana Lodge (near my home!) for Jackie and Jennifer's wedding extravaganza. Pam and Nancy at Kiana Lodge always do such a fantastic job for their couples and they went above and beyond to insure that this wedding day was sweet and magical in all ways.

It was a wonderful weekend for three marvelous weddings! I was fortunate to marry two couples at The Willows Lodge on Friday the 19th - congratulations to Cathy and Stephen and Melissa and Jason! The Willows Lodge (www.willowslodge.com) is a marvelous venue for an intimate wedding ceremony and Jenn Wenman and her staff there are exceptional!

It was then down to Thorne Castle in Tacoma to share in Clint and Karen's wedding ceremony at "2:25 p.m." I was so grateful to share in this day and for good reason. Clint was in the hospital for 30+ days earlier this year with swine flu, including 17 days in a medical coma. I'm awaiting photos and will share when I receive them. It was a hugely emotional ceremony for all, me included. Talk about such a "happy factor" in the room - with huge kudos to the terrific medical staff at St. Clare Hospital/Tacoma!

And congratulations to John and Shelbie married on February 14th ~ I love this photo of this sweet couple just after they said "I do!"

Small and intimate weddings have a sweetness to them...a "cozy factor" that you can't replicate at a venue, near the water or elsewhere.

Perhaps I love the small home wedding because that was what my wonderful husband, Greg, and I chose for our wedding. Two couples we treasured (and still do!), our Officiant Tom, and our four dogs as our "back-up witnesses!"

And of course, a wedding isn't about the size of the guest list. It's about the heart of a ritual that celebrates two people choosing each other for life.

I was visiting Photographer Jenny GG at her new Studio in Seattle yesterday and fell in love with a canvas portrait she had just completed of Dustin and Erin - it is an incredible shot of the bottom of their legs - wedding formal wear, bare feet on the Alderbrook Resort boat dock - very fun. And a perfect wall memento for this terrific couple whose wedding we fondly remember from this past October.

Each year, I work with dozens of photographers - many of whom I see more than twice. As one of the only "vendors" at a wedding on a wedding day, I have the remarkable opportunity to know these terrific guys/gals who take on the enormous task (and stressful) of capturing a wedding day.

If you are selecting and/or working with a wedding photographer this year, here are a few important pointers to keep in mind:

- Personality: Find a photographer or team whose personality you like. This is a big/huge job and finding a Photo God/Goddess whose approach to life is key in extracting those "once in a lifetime shots." In other words, if you are out-going and charismatic in personality, go with a photographer with a similar approach.

- Money: Yes, it costs a pretty penny (no matter what the budget) for a Photographer. And in my book, spend a little more to get the best Photographer possible - shave money from the cake, favors and flowers. Cake - a lot gets left behind at weddings. Favor: many get left at the reception. Flowers: what about giving each Bridesmaid a special/beautiful flower instead of a bouquet?

- Fun: Most of my couples want "happy wedding photos" - not the structure "line-ups" of years past. Work with your photographer to create a purposeful fun photo or two ahead of time - you'll love the result!
